This work is a dive into culture and racism, a part of my personal reckoning.

*This is not another death image of a black man, he is not dead, he is in the space between this world and the next, the only space white supremacy will allow him. His open hand represents hope and optimism which I imagine black men must have, to walk out into a world that is set against them. He is wearing a white shirt and socks, denoting innocence and walking a sacred path. The reflection of flashing lights casts a red hue over him, but he is whole, complete, yet other or separate. The position of his body in the composition was inspired by Gulliver’s Travels.

Social Customs

8” x 10”

Collage and acrylics

Indigenious people and stereotypes, colonizer perspective, inconsistencies in social norms - what kind of social customs did my ancestors have when they took indigenious lands? What kinds of social customs do I have today? How does that fit with my appreciation of indigenious cultures and the intrinsic value of a person?
